TT-Schall – Mitigation of Vibrations and Very Low-Frequency Noise on Ships
Project Description:
The project aims to investigate and mitigate three major sources of low-frequency noise emissions from ships:
- Propeller-induced pressure fluctuations caused by cavitation
- Low-frequency vibrations from resiliently mounted large four-stroke engines
- Vibrations from complex propulsion systems
Reducing noise emissions from these three sources will decrease both underwater radiated noise from ships and onboard noise and vibration levels. The low-frequency range is a key focus of the investigations, as it presents the greatest challenges in terms of effect mitigation and control.
For propulsion systems, generic models are to be developed to enable quick identification of suitable configurations for future projects, as well as the assessment of the consequences of typical uncertainties in input data.
For the propeller, a numerical model is to be developed that allows for reliable prediction of noise levels based on CFD calculations and thus provides a basis for assessing the effect of Wake Equalization Devices (WEDs) on noise radiation.
